Interstitial Cystitis (aka Bladder Pain Syndrome)

Does it feel like you’re getting frequent flare ups of a UTI? Do symptoms flare eating or drinking something acidic like wine, pineapple or tomatoes or citrus? Does it flare up after Intercourse? Are antibiotics just not getting it done?

Interstitial Cystitis is the inflammation of the bladder and urinary tract. It can by bacteria, a virus or fungus. It can also be affected by hormonal imbalances. Injuries to the low back or pelvis can also exacerbate this condition as can autoimmune conditions.

Symptoms: Pain at the bladder, urethral opening, pelvis or between the vagina and anus. This can make it difficult to sit in a chair. Spasm of the pelvic floor muscles and pressure throughout the pelvis. The pain can come in waves or it can be constant and debilitating. The pain can also spread to the low back, hips and down the legs.

Solutions: Often sufferers if Interstitial Cystitis rely on long term use of medications (NSAIDS, antibiotics, etc) that have adverse effects on their bodies and simply don’t solve the problem. There are natural solutions that can help decrease symptoms and flare ups.

Chiropractic Adjustment: Regularly scheduled chiropractic care can relive pressure off of joints and nerves and restore proper alignment of the low back and sacrum.

Ergonomics: making sure your chairs, car seats and bed support proper alignment.

Exercise: movement matters! Walking can help to activate the muscles that support the pelvis. There are several stretches and yoga poses that can help reduce muscles spasms to the area. Adequate core and glute strength can also help reduce the severity. It’s important to avoid positions and exercises that compromise the sacroiliac joints!

Nutrition Response Testing: This can help pinpoint the actual cause whether it’s biomechanical, infectious, hormonal or dietary in nature. NRT can help identify foods and drinks that can trigger a flare.
